_______

Workers

The top 706 publicly traded U.S. Internet firms employ 971,500 people. Wal-Mart
has 1.1 million employees.

Email Terminology

The first use of the term "electronic mail" was in 1977.

"E-mail" first appeared in 1982. It wasn't until 1993 that "e-mail" first appeared in the
Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary

Christmas Shopping

11% of all Christmas shopping is done after Christmas.

Americans

In the pre-Revolutionary era, the colonial population of this country were
first referred to as "Americans" by English writers. The term was had negative
overtones, referring to a "marginal or peripheral population unworthy of equal
status with full-blooded Englishmen. The word was uttered and heard as an
insult that designated an inferior or subordinate people."

Pet Birthdays

According to a survey conducted by the American Animal Hospital Association,
63% of pet owners celebrate their pet's birthdays.

Thrown Out Food

Twelve percent of all the groceries purchased in this country are never eaten
and thrown out. Surprisingly, nearly two-thirds of the food discarded was
bought for a special event that was cancelled. Another surprise - most food
bought on impulse is consumed. It accounts for only 2% of the food thrown away.

New Foods

Every year there are around 10,000 new processed foods put on the market in the
US. Around 90% of them fail.

Buying Foods

The most important factor when a person buys a new food product is the
packaging. Taste is the greatest determinant in the decision to buy the food
again. Around 90% of all money Americans spend on food is for processed foods.
Sex and Sports

The old "coach's tale" that athletes should avoid sexual activity the night
before a game just isn't true. Testosterone levels are higher after sexual
intercourse, and testosterone levels are directly related to levels of
aggression. Therefore, for most sports, intercourse before the game may
actually help with performance. in games like golf, which depend more on skill
and less on aggression, lower testosterone levels may actually result in better
playing.

Potato Consumption

In 1960, the average annual American consumption of fresh potatoes was 81
pounds and 4 pounds of frozen potatoes. In 2000, it was 50 pounds of fresh
potatoes and 30 pounds of frozen ones. MacDonald's is the largest buyer of
potatoes in this country. The average American consumers 4 servings of French
fries every week.

Nose Facts

Your nose (and your ears) continue to grow throughout your life.

Sneeze Speed

Sneezes can expel air that moves up to 100 m.p.h. And it is said you can't keep
your eyes open when you sneeze.

Pigs Penis

Hogs have a corkscrew shaped penis. Some have a left twist, others a right
twist. Female pigs have matching shaped vaginas. If a right twist male tries to
mate with a left twist female...well, you can imagine the problems.

Medical Myths

Here are a few commonly believed medical myths:
Colds are cost by cold temperatures
A scare can cure the hiccups
Hair can turn white in a night
Spinach makes you strong
Men have one less rib than women
The "funny bone" is a bone
Tapeworms ingest food in the human intestine, causing hunger

Golf Balls

Coburn Haskell is credited with inventing the currently used golf ball - the
wound golf ball. In 1898 he took a rubber core and wrapped it with layer or
elastometric (stretchy) string, and then covered it with a covering. The
trouble with these balls is that repeated whacking results in deformities. In
the 1990s the windings were replaced wi

Coupons-Coupons-Coupons

256 billion coupons are distributed annually. 80% are found in Sunday papers - but only 1.2% of
them are ever redeemed. Only 1% of the total coupons are e-coupons. However, 57% of
e-coupons are redeemed.

Water, Water Everywhere

97% of the world's water is in the ocean.
The Pacific Ocean covers more surface of the earth than all the land masses
combined.

paint edge.

Black American Demographics

33% of African Americans are 18 years old or younger. For whites, it 24%.

cases

99.9%

If 99.9% were good enough, then:
Five plan would crash every day
2 million documents would be lost by the IRS this year
81,000 faulty rolls of 35mm film would be loaded this year
22,000 checks would be deducted from the wrong bank
account in the next 60 minutes
1,212 phone call woild be misdirected every minute
12 babies would be given to the wrong parents every day
18,322 pieces of mail would be mishandled in the next hour

IT Perks

Internet technology workers are in great demand. Here's what companies are
offering them to sing on the dotted line:

93% Tuition reimbursement
65% Sign-on bonuses
44% Stock options
44% Project bonuses
30% Overtime pay
30% Health club memberships
15% Day care reimbursement

Toy Companies

The largest toy company in the United States in 1953 was Lionel Trains.
Geronimo

Ever wonder why people yell "Geronimo" before jumping off something? Geronimo
was an Apache chief. Legend has it that he was being pursued and became
trapped. His only escape was to jump off a cliff into a river below. On
horseback, he took this route. As he went off the edge of the cliff, he yelled
his name, "Geronimo."

Toy Sellers

For many years, Toys 'R' Us was the largest toy seller in this country. In 1998
Wal-Mart overtook Toys 'R' Us and remains the king of toy sellers in this
country.

Computer Gender

(This arrived from a reader. I am not sure where it came from, so apologizes in
advance to the author.)

As you are aware, ships have long been characterized as being female. Well,
recently a group of computer geeks (all male) announced that computers should
also be referred to as female. Their reasons for drawing this conclusion are as
follows:

Five Reasons To Believe Computers Are Female

1. No one but their creator understands their internal
logic.
2. The native language they use to communicate with other
computers is incomprehensible to anyone else.
3. The message "Bad Command or Name File" is about as
informative as, "If you don't know why I'm mad at you,
then I'm certainly not going to tell you."
4. Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long-term
memory for later retri
Internet Language

English was the first language for 80% of Internet users in 1996. Now it's the
first language in less than half.

First
Language 1996 2000
English 80% 49.9%
Chinese 1% 7.6%
Japanese 4% 7.2%
German 1% 5.9%
Spanish 1% 5.0%

Chickens

Christopher Columbus brought the first chickens to North America. The breed,
originally from Asia, was selected because they laid eggs year round. This was
more important than eating the birds themselves.

Advertising

Only 25% of public relations executives admit to lying.
Fast Food Meals

Your fast food meal of a hamburger, french fries, and a soft drink requires
about 1,500 gallons of water to make. This includes the water required to grow
the potatoes and grain, feed the cattle, etc.

Survival Rule of Four

We can live four weeks without food, four days without water, and four minutes without oxygen.

Oldest Roller Coaster

The oldest roller coaster still in operation is the Rutschenbanen (Scenic
Railway). Built in 1913, it's in Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens. The Gardens
opened in 1843.

Workplace Stress

A recent survey found that workplace stress has caused:
Sleep problems in 34% of Americans
Chocolate eating in 26% of Americans
Excessive smoking in 16% of Americans
Excessive alcohol consumption in 11% of Americans

Why Pig Shit Stinks

The odor of pig excrement comes from ammonia and other nitrogenous compounds
that are released by the pig into the air. These are formed in the animal's
intestines by bacteria that break down certain amino acids that the pig can't
properly digest. Farmers often "stuff" their pigs with corn and soy-containing
foods. These foods cause high levels of the indigestible amino acids and the
resultant malodorous discharges.
